The month of June, 2007
Wrapping up the month, I thought to myself, what have I really done that is useful? Nothing. My life in KL involved a lot of Oblivion and Cantonese drama. I am sure I learnt something about life from these dramas, but not enough to the extent of being useful. Finally, I also got sick and tired of Oblivion, not because the game, but because of my laptop. I love my laptop, and I love Oblivion, but the combination doesn't cut.
Tried Maths, but my sleep schedule everyday was very disturbed. I loved late nights and sleeping in the morning. My brain just wakes up when the night starts, and sleeps when it ends but however, other arrangements kept breaking my cycle. Well, by now, you'll know that whenever I go home, my father see the need for me to visit all the relatives. Also, we always eat out, and my family don't usually take-away stuffs, so they always force me to wake up and go eat. Unlike my previous trips home, this one I didn't really had good rest. Besides, I was already hoping really hard that I'll pass Maths, which means no more Maths modules in my life!
Wanted to do C++, but my trip at home involved just a lot of research on how to go about doing things. Only towards the end of June I finally saw the light. I was just glad Gmud was written in C, but I have no idea how things link together yet. Most of the times, I am just limited to one '.c' file and one '.h' file. That's all. How I wished I started learning programming when I was younger. I'll be doing things I wanted to do by now. It's unfortunate I didn't see a direction earlier. This holiday is no different. I have been working only with Unix for the whole semester. The big question come then, how do I make nice programs that we see and use everyday like in Windows? All I have been working on was just command line.
I don't have friends to whom I can ask the question. Most people I know do not know programming. Most people I know who know programming hates programming, so I won't be talking to them about it. It wasn't a question that you could answer with a simple Google search. I had to ask MUD friends, and people starting to like programming like me. Honestly, they don't have an idea too and are all looking for one. When you ask experts, they are usually bothered by millions of these noob questions, to the point where they don't want or feel extremely reluctant to answer. I sometimes do too, have this feeling, but I decide to always answer anyway. Maybe I haven't been bombarded with the same questions too many times before, or maybe I simply have a lot of patience?
When you lose the beginner's awe, you begin to decay.
Anyway, the direction was Charles Petzold's book. After a while, almost everyone and everything points you there. Learning WIN32 API was the way to program things that work under Windows. You see, I like my laptop with Windows XP, so if I could make it work for me, I'll like it even more! Unfortunately it was really expensive. Like really really expensive. I am poor, no doubt. I am also without income. It might be affordable and since it was like a manual you could use for life, the price was well justified. Unfortunately I came from a country where the book have to be imported. I have to place order (more money), pay exchange rates (more money), and not to mention when you convert everything, it is just not worth the money.
People are willing to teach you though, only if you know C#. But hey, I only know C! June's ending and you want me to learn C#? I know I'll be learning C++ in school the next semester. I should be learning C++ to boost my grades! Nevertheless, I went in a short hunt for the book, and decided it wasn't worth the money + time at the moment. Then I went in search of compilers and development environments to work with. I know the learning process is made a little harder if I have stuck to command lines only and besides, I found out gcc and g++ doesn't compile a program that works in Windows. Dilemma. I can't afford the book, and that means I definitely can't afford Visual C++.
More research led me to find out that Borland tools have a compiler that's cheaper than Visual C++. Cheaper here is relative. It's still twice or thrice as expensive as the book. You are probably looking at 100+ US dollars. Luckily, at this age and time, that Visual C++ 2005 Express Edition is free. No charge! I know people tell me it doesn't mean it's free speech, but hey that's good enough for learning purposes or if I did open source things. If I want to sell a program, I probably can make the investment in the future right? It was quite a bit of steps to install, and a little daunting at first. There are numerous places at which you could screw up, and I decided that I should only do it with a decent non-stop internet connection.
I have made up my mind on leaving KL for some time now, by end of June. I had only planned my KL trip to be a week or two. Not because I hate KL, but because in KL I am powerless. I can't do anything. I am being disturbed all the time and so there's no space for critical thinking. There's no place for me to run, as in literally. No one's free to bring me to a park for exercise and then bring me home, at least not on a regular basis. There's no library. There's no transport. Going out is a hassle. At least compared to when I am in Singapore. And people kept delaying me.
My sister got accepted into a university! She was skeptical about it. Anyway it wasn't very efficient, because by then it was like less than 2 weeks from start of school. They only give you a few days to consider that big step in your life and apply for loans et cetera. I had months to think about mine. I suppose that's a good thing, stress for a shorter period of time. Actually it was a bad thing. It meant that the government a little slow in processing applications. Imagine if you needed to appeal?
The course she got was International Studies. Then the big question come to what you will be when you graduate? Nothing much. At least we didn't find any good testimonials. The jobs you would be looking at got to do with being ambassadors. The chances for a graduate isn't much. The only person she knew who graduated from the course have a RM1400 a month job in Great Eastern Life offices. Wages there can go as low as RM600. My sister had the privilege of doing the RM600 job during her 8 months holiday. Seriously, it's not even worth the transport she pay to get there every morning. She's making a loss eating out too. Looks good!
Other perspectives on why it looks good. It's a 3 year course. She'll graduate same time as me. Her whole course, (completing it) costs just less than RM10,000, while I'll be owing banks S$40,000 by the end of mine. Shockingly, the RM10,000 also takes care of lodging. How about myself? I'll probably take upwards of 3 years to repay the loan, and she'll get her RM1400 job! I know in the long run I guess it doesn't matter, but I am definitely feeling the burn now. Hope and pray?

12 years old
Today is my sister's birthday. Woah, twelve years old already. It was like yesterday when she was a small baby. I feel old. I mean, really old. No matter, I am forever sixteen :). She had always been the superstar. I am starting to agree with some research books about the effect of number of siblings and also the youngest sibling.

Vista woes
First and foremost, I am no enemy of Microsoft. I use their programs quite often, but I had composed this post in frustration. When my father called me and told me the internet couldn't work for Vista com, (they bought a new desktop, a Dell Dimension E51something) I know I am in for quite a bit of trouble. I just didn't know the magnitude of the problem until I saw it. It ran Windows Vista Home Basic (what do you expect from a budget computer?) and ran on integrated graphics (that's weak, for a desktop). I was rather excited at first, for my first actual encounter of Vista.
Vista was pretty, at least more pretty than XP. XP can be pretty though, but the difference just put the two in a different league. I liked some new designs and new features of it, but hated some others. Immediate first look, I disliked the fact that as an extra step of protection, they ask you if you really really opened a program and want it to run. Like, "maplestory.exe wants to run, did you start the program?". So there's an extra mouse click for everything. Everything you start, you need an extra mouse click to confirm. I know it's to protect people who don't know what might be running in the background, but you are now talking about someone who at least have some idea how things work. It felt like an insult to my intelligence, since it was practically asking, "Do you know what you are doing?" after every few clicks. Of course I know what I am doing. I love my mouse. I want it to last as long as it could! Jokes aside, I wonder if this could be disabled, never done a Google search on it, but it's on my 'to-do' list when I next encounter a system running Windows Vista.
Vista's sidebar is quite pretty. However, it could be much prettier if the RSS feed works. The RSS feed doesn't work because the internet doesn't work. Getting down and dirty to set up everything. Ok, all the settings are correct. Why doesn't it work? It works, actually. Just that it is extremely extremely slow. Everything encounters the 'time-out', meaning the opposite end didn't give a response on time. If you were lucky, you might be able to load Google's search page in 5 minutes. I got that twice! How lucky I am. Before you conclude anything, I actually done my homework.
I did a Google search on my problem, and found out i am not alone. A lot of people actually had that problem. None of the links offered solution. Most are just forums where people ask for help and no one answers, because no one knows how to answer. It just gets worse. I finally managed to get to a forum where MVPs (Microsoft Valued Programmers) actually read and answers question and there are more than 10 threads all with the same title. No solution. In case you were wondering, I googled 'vista internet very slow'. Then I found another IT Profesional, who had the same problem as me. Jinx. Same workstation, same ISP, same problem, and he managed to resolved it. Hooray, I thought. His solution requires some tweaking of configuration and disabling prefetch. I thought of it and executed it before I even saw him doing it.
Ok, before I did the Google search, I have already tried things like disabling IE7's phishing filter, as I know it can cause quite a bit of problem. Disabled firewalls as well. Anything that could increase speed, I have done. Checked all the configuration settings to be correct multiple times. (Not once or twice, more than 10 times). Ok, none else have the same workstation with the same configuration as me. Then I formed another theory on how it could be the case. I know TMNet wouldn't update the the best possible software so soon. The protocol that Vista uses is IPv6 but I figured out that TMNet would still be using IPv4. After reading much, I hear than most ISPs have yet to adapt to to IPv6. Then I went to Microsoft's website and figured out how to disable IPv6 and use IPv4 only through the registry. No good.
Then my father said that the salesman told him there would be no problem and it works. Apparently it worked on the demo station they showed him. Were they just lucky? Apparently so. It seemed to be random, whose internet can work and whose couldn't. I have seen some threads where other people with the same configuration and the internet doesn't work but another person with the same configuration and the internet work fluidly. Same ISPs of course. I therefore concluded it was not a problem with IPv4 or IPv6, and Vista should be dynamic enough to know how to switch between the two. My settings were correct anyway, and I only put in settings for IPv4. I am then convinced it could be software corruption due to the pre-installed Vista. In addition, most people don't state which version of Vista they use, so it could well probably be a problem with Vista Home Basic.
I hesitated on doing a reformat. That is because I am using the computer's drive as backup for my laptop. It's only natural, since the desktop had like 120GB and my laptop has 50GB. I am positive McAfee is up to no good too. I have previously uninstalled the one I got 90 days free with my laptop. Took too long to boot, and I don't like it. =) So I killed it. However, I am not the exclusive owner to the desktop. I had to talk to my sister and my father first. They didn't want it gone because they do not know how to protect themselves if it was gone. Anyway it was just a 90 days free trial. I told them it is unlikely that we'll write virus to sabotage ourselves and if you can't go onto the internet anyway, having McAfee Antivirus is no use.
I found evidence of it slowing down the computer and showed it to them. Vista have this neat feature where you can view which processes is using how much bandwidth. You can even view hard disk read/write rate by which processes. Some McAfee proxy is hogging up all the bandwidth. Apparently, everything you do have to go through it, before you can access outside. I assume it installed in ring 0, very near the core of the kernel. Many people on the internet after Google search reported that their internet started working fine after uninstalling McAfee. I cross my fingers.
McAfee is pretty neat. I was sure I disabled all firewalls. In the past, when I needed more RAM, I'll just open task manager and end all antivirus processes. Usually saves a lot of RAM. This time around, I was at the task manager to end it once and for all. Guess what? It was protected. It didn't allow me, the user, to end it. It assumed I was some virus trying to get rid of it. I got really angry at it, so uninstalling was the next option. It was protected as well. So you give me something that blocks my internet access and you disallow me to get rid of it? Never seen such intrusive software before, save for a virus. After much disabling of security features, I finally got rid of it. The whole computer seemed much faster with the spare RAM. It took 20 seconds less to boot and I'm loving my computer without anti-virus.
You guessed it, my internet still didn't work. At least there was a noticeable speed increase. Everything else still 'time-out' but Google search page managed to load itself in less than 4 minutes. I consider that an achievement. Last thing to do, reformat and reinstall, which I doubt I'll do. I told my father there's nothing we can do now until Microsoft resolve the issue. All we can do is wait until more and more people complain, then hopefully Microsoft will try to work out a solution. After a few days, there was this patch for slow IE7 that came out. I thought that was the solution! Quickly downloaded it on my XP laptop, transferred over to Vista desktop via thumbdrive, then tried to install the patch. The version was correct, the package was meant for Vista, but after extracting all files, it told me it was not the correct version so it auto terminates.
No other solution even after surfing the internet a few days. Frustration at its max. I was sure it wasn't the problem with my ISP since what explains the same line works flawlessly with my XP laptop but doesn't work with my Vista desktop? The internet settings were exactly the same for both. There was a reason to change from Windows 98 to Windows 2000 or XP, because there was a distinct core difference. XP's plug and play is just superior to Windows 98's. Back in Windows 98, you have to install a driver for everything, including thumbdrives. Most thumbdrives don't have an internet existence, especially when you bought some brandless, made in 'somewhere' thumbdrives. They were PLC (cheap and good), that's why we bought it. In Windows XP, the default drivers are installed, meaning you could really plug and play.
The problem now isn't thumbdrive. It's a made in China USB Ethernet Card. It had a brand that escapes me. However, when searching for drivers, this company got eaten up by another company which in turn got sold to another company and so on and so forth. Bottomline, no drivers that I could easily find online. I am so grateful they didn't throw away the CD that came with it. It's plug and play with Windows XP, so I never needed the CD, but not the case with Vista. Somehow I felt it was a downgrade, like from XP to Win98.
Of course, no internet was the most irritating thing about Vista already. The plug and play problem was quite minor. Other things that irritates me about it? Incompatibility. I know the patch would never complete under such a slow internet, so I downloaded the latest version of Maple Story onto my laptop, then transfered it over, just to please my youngest sister. My father actually bought the PC since the Win98 desktop is pretty well beyond it's due date. It's a Celeron 366Mhz. So that my youngest sister at home could do her work, project and play some Maple Story since she's been wanting to do that for a long time. If you are a kid, and all your friends play, and you don't have it, I can't help but to feel deprived.
Installed then started it, uh-oh, there has been a known incompatibility with Vista warning message, and ask us to contact Wizet. Wizet issued a statement that they do not suppory Vista. I know the internet was very very slow and hoped it would at least make it to log on screen. No luck. It starts with a black screen and auto-terminates with the abnormal quitting warning messages and ask if you want to send the information to Microsoft. I know she'll probably time-out before log in anyway. Tried tweaking the compatibility modes. Some people reported it being working under Vista if set to Windows 98/ME compatibility mode. I figured I'll try. Run as admin? Still no luck. So I told my sister, sorry, no Maple Story for you, and she was so sad.
I so want to roast Vista and install XP over it. But it's a little tricky, you see, I left both my Windows XP CD in Singapore. I have none of those in Malaysia. I also tried Resident Evil 4 that came out not too long ago. Been excited all over it for some time. It passed installation, no incompatibility warning message. Guess what happened when I start the game? "DX9somethingsomething.dll is not found." Of course Directx 9 files are not found, Vista runs on Directx 10. To think that Resident Evil 4 was such a recent game and yet doesn't run on Vista, I don't know what else doesn't run. I just know that it's going to be a lot of softwares, even some that are in development.
So, my father asked me, as a future computer engineer, can't you do anything to resolve it? I suggested that worse come to worse we contact our ISP and Dell. I called up our ISP technical support team. Of course, following their standard operating procedure, they have to ask if the modem power is switched on, etc etc. Even though I felt my intelect being insulted, (even though I don't have much intelect anyway) I managed to bear with it. Came a part where we confirmed all settings to be correct. They were. Didn't work. The operator answering the phone was a lady. She told me to change some settings, even gave me IP and all the DNS servers addresses, to test. Rebooted multiple times, resetted modem multiple times, still does not work. Finally, she blamed it on IPv6 vs IPv4 issue. She was getting impatient to hang up and was sure there was nothing she could do to help.
You see, it was almost 6 p.m. and we started at 4 p.m.. It was beyond her working hours. She finally said the server may be down. Then I told her, it worked fine with my XP laptop. She had nothing else to say. Anyway, spare her the agony. Just thanked her and hung up. Anyway I called the ISP knowing well that there was a high chance they wouldn't solve my problem. Besides, she wasn't a professional or anything, just a day to day worker following troubleshooting guidelines. I was doing it just to prove to my dad that I am doing something about it.
Then my dad called Dell. Dell says they are not responsible for software issues. The desktop was less than a month old, so it was definitely within warranty. Dad wants me to call Microsoft. I was like, are you mad? Microsoft didn't directly sell you the thing. Dell sold you the whole thing as a package. Feeling bad, I obliged anyway. Turned out that if you needed interactive support that guarantees that you get an answer, you'll have to pay. You'll have to pay to subsribe to some 90 days support thing. I am pretty sure the solution isn't already in the support centre database, because I searched over and over.
So how? Wait lo.
Meanwhile I advice against buying Vista. Assuming your XP works perfectly fine for whatever you do. I am just sad to see all the new laptops shipping with Vista. They don't know what they are selling? My friend asked me for advice on buying laptops, and those models still shipping with XP are rather old models with relatively older parts. The PLC (cheap and good) laptops ships with Vista. Dilemma.

NBA Live!
Going home was a lot of nostalgia all over again. I am human, so I can't help feeling the same way over and over again. Of course, the best part of home other than good food (good Ramly Burger!) was Astro. Even though you can't practically receive anything when it rains, most programmes have repeat telecast, and since I was on holiday anyway, it didn't felt like that much of a hassle. So I ended up watching everything under the sun, almost every hour I am awake.
I position my laptop in such a way that it faces the tv. This is some form of ultimate multitasking. I am watching tv even though I am using laptop at the same time. This definitely takes using the laptop to a new level. Canto drama, sports channel, and whatever they can throw at us. Also it was the period of NBA finals during the one week that I was home. So you guessed it, I watched almost all possible matches live and even watched the repeat. I don't even know if I was a great fan of basketball, but I do have fun in observing how people play ball.
I can't help but to comment, hopefully constructive comments. Everyday they show us some greatest classic games of all time. Now I know why Patrick Ewing or Karl Malone is so popular. Watching them in their prime was definitely different. Watched Reggie Miller when he was a rookie. It was filled with names of people I don't know, so I wiki them to see if I can get more information. Sadly, some of the people whom I think played well don't have a wiki page, so I don't know what happened to them. Oh well, I think NBA themselves have an archive anyway. From the looks of things, I like Scottie Pippen more than Michael Jordan, maybe because the few games they showed, Michael Jordan was just normal, and not doing anything out of ordinary. Pippen, on the other hand, was steady, and had a high percentage.
Those are great games, of course I enjoyed watching them. They were selected because they were interesting. I couldn't have said the same about the NBA Playoffs though. I had expected Pistons to win the Cavaliers but it had been disappointing. Pistons didn't looked or felt like they were the team they were back when they took the champion in 2005. All the nice defence, was just not as strongly present as they were in 2005. I know the team was a little different, but the core of the team was still the same. I like to watch Tayshaun Prince, and am sure he was working as hard as he could, but he wasn't as fast as Lebron James. James also had a better dribbling. It felt as if I was watching James get anywhere he wanted on the court. Unstoppable.
When Cavaliers finally pushed their way through Pistons, I was convinced that Cavaliers were on the route of being champion. In fact, I believed that they would be champions. I believe that a team can be brought back up by the leadership of one person. I know what coaches say and ultimately basketball is a team game, but watching Pistons vs. Cavaliers tells you somewhat otherwise. I become convinced James could beat Spurs. Sure, Spurs was a veteran team, but so what? Someone beat the Mavericks in the first round right? If James could get anywhere he wanted, winning isn't so tough.
Then I watched on, hoping hard that Cavaliers would win champion but it had been disappointing. Not only James couldn't get anywhere he wanted, he couldn't shoot. In fact, the whole Cavalier team was shooting real bad. Except for perhaps Gibson. Even when the Spurs had a shooting drought, Cavaliers didn't catch up much because they were constantly missing. Oops, sorry, Lebron James just doesn't feel fell today and everything flops. That's the danger when you depend too much on one person I guess. Cavaliers shouldn't just depend on him alone even though there might be a fighting chance in that. They need other good players to step up. I know it's easy to say but high in difficulty to achieve. I think if they had two Lebron James, it would all be a different story. They would be champions for many years to come! =) Parker for MVP? No doubt. He played the most beautifully amongst everyone on court.

Homebound
After doing everything that I want to achieve for the time being, and putting the rest to a halt, I was headed for home. I also passed my monitor on to Michael and hopefully he would make good use of it. I am not in a position to complain even if he doesn't make good use of it. It was only worth $5 at the second hand electronics store. Somehow I agree. No one buys these things anymore. Sigh, what am I going to do at home? I seriously have no plan. Bringing my laptop home was just part of the plan that I'll do something productive.
Hopefully an exciting journey awaits me.

About Me
Wai Hong is currently an undergraduate student at National University of Singapore. He majors in Computer Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering. He is a member of the forever sixteen :) club since he was sixteen. He was lucky enough to end up in Anglo-Chinese School Independent and then Anglo-Chinese Junior College, where he spent his best years and still looking to spend more best years. He was born into the world on 16th October, sixteen years ago. =)
