It is now officially minutes to my next birthday. I do not know why, but there is a sad feeling coming all over me. I look back on the year that have past and I ask myself, what meaningful things have I done over the past year, and the answer is none. Nothing. Thinking back, my life for the past year had been boring. I did nothing but run to school every morning, go for exams, play games the whole weekend, basketball trainings, mrc meetings and camps and that is all. I was not really adventurous this year in a sense that I did not try very many things for the first time. This sadness is not so much due to me feeling old, though I do feel old sometimes. Rather, it is more due to the fact that I have wasted a year. I did not think the past year was well lived though year there are good times and bad times. Somehow it could have been much better and it is possible. I know quoting could have been is senseless, because many people could have been something, but I cannot help feeling so because it was really within my power to live the past year fruitfully. This coming year, it is with high hopes that I will live this year well. Think my AC bear is a very good inspiration. Do you know why? Because he/she is always looking up.
Today’s newspapers did not look pretty. With so many catastrophic natural disasters we could only ask, is the world coming to an end? In my opinion, natural disaster is just a way nature trying to re-achieve a balance. If we are all well prepared, there is nothing to fear. The disaster can come many times over and we may still not be moved. Just as the newspaper quoted, a 7.6 Ritcher scale earthquake killed 50 in California but a 7.6 Ritcher scale earthquake killed 30,000 in Turkish.
The newspaper also discussed about how some Singaporean are too generous in certain charities. I think that newspaper sensationalism really played a part in generating more donations. There are many people who need help out there but just because their stories are not published, therefore they did not get the amount they needed. I flipped the newspaper over and over again. I heard Huang Na’s mother seek to add an additional storey to her two-storey house in China with the ‘white gold’ she got from her daughter’s funeral. Oh well, what is the difference between Huang Na and any other person who died? The ‘white gold’ for my mother’s funeral could not even cover her funeral expenses. Guess that is just how life goes. Then I flipped over. I saw this tiny advertisement asking for donations for some Pocket Money fund. Meng Die, 9 had to go hungry during some recesses because she does not have money. She, her two siblings and her parents live in a rented house. I think to myself, actually I qualify for the Pocket money fund, because I do go hungry through some recesses (obvious reasons) and I have two siblings, a parent and we all live in a rented government flat. Why am I not on the newspaper? Maybe you could say I am a bit luckier, because I live here in the Boarding School, and I do not have to go hungry for too long before I get a meal. Maybe that is why I am quite accustomed to having one meal per day.

Received a birthday card from home on Monday night. It is one of those Memory Lane cards (reputed to be expensive) but I found the message very touching and very true. Here is the message..
We sometimes grow so long
without catching up
with each other,
We’re both really busy
With our day-to-day
responsibilities.
But still, I want you to know
How often I
Think about you,
And how much I enjoy the times
We do have the chance to talk…
You’ll always be very
important
to me,
and I’ll always
be grateful
that you’re my brother.
Have a
Happy Birthday
The card came much too early considering that my birthday is this Sunday but it did remind me that my age is climbing. I am nearing the edge of my teenage-hood. If turning one meant you have lived one year, I am turning nineteen this Sunday. Hey, my days as a King is ending, and my donkey days are coming. I only have one year left as a teen even though deep inside, I didn’t really grow. Sometimes, I look back and think what useful things I really did in the past almost nineteen years now, and I find none, but I am still thankful that I had lived my life this way. At least I am happy, and that is all that matters, right? At the same time, I wonder how my next few years of life would be like. Adjusting to adulthood is certainly not easy. We lose so many characteristics that makes us us, having to blend in with the society and their acceptable norms. We now have to take responsibilities on everything we do, so life become such a serious business that many people had forgot to have fun. Hey, I will never grow up, deep inside. Nothing will ever change, will it?
Regina came to school for the past three days, making Michelle the undisputed pon queen! It would be really interesting tomorrow if she turned up at the Baccalaureate Service tomorrow after her five weeks of holiday. For now, we shall crown Michelle the pon queen of SC5, with perfect (non)attendance for the past five weeks.
On Monday I was giving away snacks and everything and one question came to me which I really could not answer on the spot. The question is, “For what?, What occasion is it? Santa Claus? Christmas is not here yet. Why are you giving away stuffs?” I want to give because I might never have the chance to give again. You all are very important to me. I love sharing snacks anyway. Hopefully you will remember me when you eat certain snacks again, twenty years down the road? I have too many reasons. I cannot help but I think I am just too sentimental. I always hope things would never change, but change is the only thing that never changes. As school is coming to an end, an overpowering gloom had descended upon me. The scare is always the same, that is, I might never get to meet many people again. Even my secondary schoolmates, many of them had disappeared and I have never seen them since. For a moment, I just hope that school would never end, and people would never have to leave but think this will never happen. Everything that started had to come to an end. The only good news is, to every end, comes a new beginning.
Over the last few days, had a lot of last lectures. Especially today, because today all the tutorials are in my timetable and since today is the last day of lessons, practically the whole day we are having last tutorials. Today was very fun as everyone seemed to be on high and we ended up taking the whole day just chatting with our teachers about their lives and what are our plans. It is very rare that lessons are this fun. It truly triggered me to think about life. Their experiences were truly very rich and full of colours. How they ended up in ACJC would prove to be interesting. Each of their experiences was very different from the rest, to the extent that some of them are unexpected as well. Some of the interesting things we learnt today were that my Physics teacher and my Mathematics teacher were both former Malaysians. There was only one university in Malaysia at that time and both of them graduated from there.
My Physics teacher was originally from Penang, and he met his wife at a sports meet for teacher in Alor Star. I forgot which part of Malaysia his wife was from but what I know was that Mr. Lee used to play ping-pong and his wife played badminton. He was teaching in some other state some twenty plus years ago and applied to teach back in his hometown in Penang because his mother was there. The government approved him to teach in Penang but disallowed his wife to transfer to Penang. He said he was so angry with the government but luckily, Singapore was short of teachers at that time and he came down to try his luck. Poof! And he taught Physics in ACJC for the past 26 years ever since that incident. Currently, his wife is teaching in some secondary school in Singapore. Come to think of it, had that incident not happened, he would probably still be a Penang school teacher or maybe, school principal. It is interesting how destiny moves people, and how we encounter each other. It would be fate that we even met and for that reason, I treasure my friends very much, because they are my friends, destined to be my friends. Someone once told me, life is like a train. The journey of life is a long one but at every station without fail, someone would come into your carriage and someone would leave your carriage. To a large extent I think that statement is very true.
Now we move on to my Maths teacher. He was from Malacca. He studied in ACS(Melaka) and at that time was the only secondary school there that offered Form 6. The school name had been changed since to some Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (Bla Bla Bla) which he cannot remember. Before today, I did not even know that there was an ACS in Malacca. How he ended up here is still a mystery, but I know that he had been teaching for many many years now.
My Bio teacher is interesting too. I think she is quite pretty! Anyway, she was Miss ACJC circa 1998 (around there) and she was a MGS girl. She became Singapore PR because her parents migrated here. She would tell us stories about how everyone would think she is Malay because she came from Malaysia.
I think my GP teacher teaches very well. It is just my opinion but nonetheless, my GP grades had been constantly improving under her. Her methods usually works and she would give very intelligent points about certain topics. She could handle situations very well too, in a calm and practical manner. Before today, I did not really guess her background. Guess what? She was from Ghim Moh JC(in her own words). Her secondary school was IJ though I did not know which one. She was quick to angle away from our questions and direct questions back to us instead. We ended up telling her more of our life stories rather than hearing hers. After further discussion, we all concluded that two years in JC is much too short to get to know your class really well. Most of the people do not learn their attitudes or behaviour from JCs. They carry with them whatever behaviour that they had from before. Teachers too, feel that even before they know a student well enough, it is already time to say farewell.
My. Kuna is even more interesting. He was from VI, and then went on to a JC that I had forgotten the name. (I am so forgetful!!) Anyway, he was one of the better cross country runners in his secondary school days and it turned out that he broke a certain record in cross country. Of course, by now, his record would have been broken, but he was still quite proud of it and suggested that we check VI school magazine to see his name. (Was it 1978? See, I forgot again…) He joined hockey in JC and nevertheless, still continued to run long distance. However, what happened after that is a mystery. He only shared up to his JC days because he wanted to encourage us to work hard and not repeat his mistakes. As he had joined many sports in JC, by the time his sports season ended and it is time to study, he found the volume that he needed to study overwhelming and since he could not finish revising everything, he decided to spot questions. He was not lucky because most of the chapters that he prepared for were not tested and he said there was one paper, Bio paper that was so unlucky that only one chapter out of all that he prepared for came out.
Getting late and think I shall end here. More on my thoughts about this few days next time. Actually I still have lots to type but decided to shorten a lot of my thoughts in order to not use too much time typing. Besides, really long entries are hard for the reader to read as well, isn’t it? Hopefully tomorrow would be another memorable day. As I am typing this I was repeating the song ‘graduation’ and I think words of this song are very true. It conveys just the feelings that I am having now, and here is how it goes.
So we talked all night about the rest of our lives
What we’re gonna be when we turn 25
Keep on thinking times will never change
Keep on thinking things will always be the same
But when we leave this year we won’t be coming back
No more hanging out cause we’re on different track
And if you got something that you need to say
You better say it right now cause you don’t have another day
Cause we’re moving on and we can’t slow down
These memories are playing like a film without sound
And I keep thinking of that night in June
I didn’t know much of love
But it came too soon
And there was me and you
And then we got real cool
Stay at home talking on the telephone with me
We’d get so excited, we’d get so scared
Laughing at ourselves thinking life’s not fair
And this is how it feels
Chorus – As we go on
We remember
All the times we
had together
And as our lives change
Come whatever
We will still be
Friends Forever!
So if we get the big jobs
And we make the big moneyWhen we look back nowWill our jokes still be funny? Will we still remember everything we learned in school?Still be trying to break every single ruleWill little brainy Bobby be the stockbroker man?Can Heather find a job that won't interfere with her tan?I keep, I keep thinking that it's not goodbyeKeep on thinking it's a time to flyAnd this is how it feels
Repeat chorus
Will we think about tomorrow like we think about now?Can we survive it out there? Can we make it somehow?I guess I thought that this would never endAnd suddenly it's like we're women and menWill the past be a shadow that will follow us 'round? Will these memories fade when I leave this townI keep, I keep thinking that it's not goodbyeKeep on thinking it's a time to fly
Repeat chorus three times

Tomorrow marks the start of the last week of school. To a large extent, the next week would also be one of my biggest regrets. Tomorrow would be nothing like what I have envisioned when I first started my days at ACJC but I am happy to settle with the way it is. Given a choice, I would choose to do this all over again the same way but deep in the back of my mind, I am hoping that I would not make so many wrong choices. I had thought that the last week of school would be fun time with the class that I would grow very close to. To this day, I am still not very close to half of my class. I just know most of my classmates superficially and I am deeply sorry for that. Some of my classmates are just plain weird, while others would prefer to keep to their own friends. Initiating conversations would be difficult as sometimes they would not be interested. Conversations are usually mere question and answer and that’s it. Think I am not making a good enough effort and till this day this would be my biggest regret these two years.
Sigh, the last week is already here, and I am still wondering what I am really doing. Reflecting back, my JC life had been one full of colour. I remember my early days in JC, and how they were one of the happiest moments of my life. For a certain period of time, I thought I was invincible, my optimistic attitude at its best. For everything it was no problem, and I could do all things and still do them well. Those were my first three months in JC. I could easily talk to everyone I want to and the void deck was my ground, for almost every table I knew someone who sits there quite closely. I got 21/20 for Chem test, and top the class for Bio, not to mention heavy gaming sessions on certain nights. Thinking back, there must have been one underlying factor that had contributed to this. At that time, I was occupying two beds to myself, and I could do anything I wanted anytime I wanted. Therefore, my time planning works most of the time because there would be minimal disruption. However, after the first three months, everyone just isn’t the same anymore. Aside from new classmates, the old ones seemed to be more serious, focusing on studies. Hence for a period of time, everyone spoke less to each other, and ‘cliques’ start to form. People start to just associate themselves with only a few people. Though this phenomenon is observable in most classes, I thought I didn’t have to be my class. My seniors had warned me before, but I thought I wouldn’t be so lucky. I was wrong.
Sigh, and so, a year and a half of monotonous classes had passed since. Nevertheless, there are other memorable events. Project Work is still my pride because I learnt through it, persevered and emerged victorious. I would account most of my PW achievements due to luck. I had fun through most of the PW meetings, because it is one of those times that I get to mix with people who normally would not mix with me. I get to know them much better that way, and since we have to do work together, that would be where most of the friendship blooms. Went to Terence’s house and it is interesting to look at people’s house too. You get to know which environment would cultivate which kind of people. Terence’s siblings are all very tall. His brother is taller than me and his sister is taller than my sister by a lot. There are many reasons why my good grades were due to luck. First, annotations on articles, I just happened to get very good articles (by accident, really) and therefore I already gained an upper-hand. Then, when I am doing my annotations, everything I do seemed right. I was just ‘kiasu’ and just wrote as much as I could, including commenting on credibility almost every sentence of the article but it seemed to be the thing they were looking for. I even derived a formula to do this annotation thing myself. Hopefully I can derive a good formula for GP essay too, but the problem is, I did not have a personal good essay to derive from. Thirdly, I was blessed with good teammates. Seeing one of them work so hard I was so ashamed of myself, and I could not bear to slack. It is just unfair and besides, I really feel very bad. Lastly, I thought my OP was bad. Cause I was semi-panicking and accidentally I had flipped my flashcards too fast. To flip-back would make me look very unglam, so I just gave up on the flashcards altogether. The examiner interpreted that move to be me having great confidence. I looked at the result slip and all the examiner’s comment and I laughed. I am so happy it turned out well.
Another memorable event was that we lost our presentation the night before the Oral Presentation. I was still awake at 2+a.m. playing games (as I was virtually on holiday and my OP is in the afternoon) and just before I switch off my com, I received a call from Carol. I haven’t received a call from her for a very long time, so I thought it must be very important. Somehow, the Powerpoint presentation in Terence’s com could not be extracted. Anyway, I did not know who did the earlier presentation anyway, and we did not get to see because Terence’s com did not have Powerpoint. Besides, the content of that one was lacking as we added lots of stuffs when we rehearsed at Terence’s house. The call lasted all the way to 6a.m. I marvel at the perseverance and enthusiasm of Carol, because she woke up just to fix the previous presentation just so that we can use it the next day. Hmmm, it was also an opportunity for me to show my skills, and since Carol asked me, I really did not want to turn her down. (That explains why I was so familiar with the mouse clicks and such, adding to my confidence points) So we chatted whole night (morning), and she already have all the points in chronological order, making my job much simpler. I also read my roommate’s supervising tutor’s notes on making presentation and I did accordingly. After she hung up, I continued to work on choosing the best backdrop, animations, Cliparts and so on. I am lucky that I had Powerpoint with so many Cliparts. Most other Powerpoints I had used do not have such nice ones, and relevant to my project. Another reason why I was lucky was that I realized that the computer that we are supposed to use do not have the template that I had chosen, not to mention all the Cliparts too, but I managed to borrow Valerie’s laptop, which had everything. She was like the saviour for the moment, because I had thought we were doomed. It was our turn and our presentation would only be mere words and nothing else. Not to mention all the hard work me and Carol put in the morning before would have gone completely to waste. (I only took a short nap of about an hour before reaching school at 10a.m.) I mean if it had to happen that way, I was just tough, just our bad luck but it did not, and for that reason, I still think I owed a lot of people something for my Band 1 in PW.
Just now I was at Dover and one of the headlines of the newspapers that caught me was, ‘Racist Blogger convicted’. That triggered me to think deeper and further into the topic. I do not know why, but I ended up with a lot of other interesting issues like intellectual properties, invasion of privacy, MP3s, and so on. I shall not go so deeply into these interesting thoughts now because it is almost 1a.m. and I had been typing for the past an hour an a half. I am not racist myself but the fact that you can be convicted for what you say on the blog is totally absurd. And I thought Singapore is supposed to be a civilized society? PM Lee said they would take action on all the people who are hate-mongering and would not tolerate such behaviour. They would go all the way to catch these people, no matter what medium they use. His statements made sense, but I think they would be largely irrelevant now. People should learn to take certain things seriously and others, not so seriously. It was on the basis that everyone took things very seriously and so hate-mongering got the Malays all flared up during the 1964 (I cannot really remember my history, hope I did not get the date wrong) Racial Riots. In my opinion, the same taking things too seriously attitude is the attitude that cultivates terrorists. These terrorists become terrorists because they seriously believe that they are dying for a greater cause. I am not trying to denounce their effort but I am sure there are better means for achieving a cause. Fundamentalism works very well with people who take everything seriously, or at least that is what I think. Even when doing Project Work, teachers ask us to sieve out useful information and just ignore the not so useful ones. Readers should learn to sieve out the point from whatever they are reading and filter out useless remarks, such as those racist remarks. It shouldn’t be that difficult for an average Singaporean to do. Singapore had lived in racial harmony for many years now and I think racist remarks would never break Singapore apart. Everywhere I go, people of different races mix together well (maybe because I am not out in the real world yet) and certain racist remarks are actually meant to be a friendly joke. At the end of the day, we all laugh together (and cry together) and strong friendships were built this way.
Getting late, so I better end off. For this last week of school, I am going to live it up as if I had never before. I am going to be invincible, and school, here I come! I would not leave with many regrets and while I still have time, I am going to compensate for all the mistakes that I made. Hopefully, this coming week would be another happiest moments of my life. I am going to live school like how I was in the first three months, in this last leg of my school life.

By today, the top three ponners should be about 11/14 in number of day ponned. Amazing, I wonder what they did in their two weeks holidays.
As I walked home yesterday, none of the effects of the previous night’s strong winds remained. The ‘fake’ palm trees in the Dover neighbourhood had been propped upright with wooden supports. In fact, they looked more upright than they have ever been. The handwork was very neat and if you were not there to witness the fallen palm trees, you woudn’t even suspect that they had fallen. That was so efficient! As I walked over back home as well, the mess of mangled steel had been removed. Only things left behind are small bits and pieces of ropes that used to hold the shelter in place. I finally managed to survey more closely the damage done to the flagpoles. There were five flagpoles, one of them is bent (permanently) about 70 degrees from the vertical from the point of contact with the ground, smashing into the back panels of the grandstand, and therefore, some of the seats of the grandstand are no longer horizontal. Another flagpole was broken right at the halfway-up point. The middle three still stood. Haha, I still do not have a camera to record down the events and my description is lousy, and a picture speaks a thousand words so I wouldn’t have to describe so much. Anyway, the afternoon was hot (it was 2p.m.), so much different from the chilly morning.
When I reached home I started discussing about the wind with my roommate, as we did not have the chance before that. I turned out hilarious as my roommate had thought it was the end of the world. I asked him that since he woke up earlier, why didn’t he close the doors and windows? He said at that point of time he was preparing to meet God, and was thinking what to say when he finally meets God. It turned out that the night before he was reading literature on end of the world in a Christian perspective.
Yesterday I finally finished revising Bio (in a rush, so was not as fantastic, I still forget bits and pieces here and there) and so I felt very refreshed. For a moment I was very enthusiastic about studying because I realized I really took too long for Bio alone. I am running out of time much too fast. Next stop, I am going to conquer Chem and Maths together, in an effort to save time and do more practices instead. Finally, I treated myself to Sims 2 after a job well done, and ended up spending the rest of the day for Sims 2! Hope I would not get addicted!
Today I finally had my first game of Dota in the Com Lab. In fact, I had two. I was attracted because my classmates were playing, and since it is the second last week of school, I figured that these things are going to be the things that we would remember the most when we leave school. Hmmm, sometimes the guys play with the ‘ray gun’ and gas masks in the level 7 Bio lab, think those are very memorable too! Looking back, it was like yesterday when we had second week of school, fresh from orientation. And now we are already on the second last week of school. Sometimes, I think time is so beautiful when it stops. Last two weeks of school are like the most fun weeks, other than orientation weeks, so I wonder why people still want to absent themselves. I still have yet to really know everyone in my class yet. Two years is much too short. The hardest part about farewell is that you will wonder when you will ever see this other person again, once we all have left school grounds for the last time. Even for my secondary schoolmates, there are many that I never got to see again up to this point. Just the other day I saw this guy in NJ uniform. I am quite sure he was from ACS(I) but I just do not know his name. We exchanged a few stares and then we walked separate ways. Hmmm, even in my Sec 4 class, many people are already scattered all over. Some are overseas, while others are in other JCs. Some just plainly ‘disappeared’. The other day I was digging my old stuffs to find something to throw away, and I found my Sec 4 class list. Sure brings back lots of memories. Think it is going to be the same this time around again. Especially after I did not have the chance to really get to know many people in my class now. I am deeply sorry, hope I would not make the same mistake ever again. At the end of the day, what we carry out of the classroom is lasting friendships, not those lessons we had. It had been said that the friends that you make in school would be your best friends when you go out into the ‘real’ world. Think I am not ready for the ‘real’ world yet. I have yet to make enough friends! =p
Just now during prep we had interesting stories about how Russian engineers have to spend a year doing fairy tales. Everyone was like going what does fairy tales got to do with engineering? Their logic was you have to break away from your ‘common’ common sense, because certain arguments may be absurd but it may work for that certain problem. He said that Russian (engineers) logic is that, since they have a lot of (human) resources, it would be better to invest a small amount of time to develop a simple machine that works and they would just keep repairing it again and again. The bottomline is that it works. Their argument is that it would be pointless to invest so much time and money and everything else to develop a high-quality machine that claims that it will never break down. We know by experience, that there is nothing that never breaks down. That is probably why NASA would stop their space program every time there is an accident, but Russian space program never stalls. After an accident, maybe two weeks later, they’ll launch another space probe. I wonder if most of the things Mr. Chew said were true. He told us a lot about Mr. Lenn, his uncle’s classmate, class of 1955. He said that people of that generation is a bit weird. I had never encountered Mr. Lenn myself but apparently he was doing relieve teaching the J1s and I heard even more interesting stories. Mr. Lenn is a person who likes to tell interesting stories. Mr. Chew said that Mr. Lenn once said, the best swimming pool is one which is infinitely deep. Those who do well in Literature would do well in Physics and those who cannot do well in Literature can never do well in Physics. There are good arguments for both the statements, just that those statements might not be true. We have to use our own judgment and verify the credibility of both statements. Food for thought eh?
The 'pon' leaders of today are stil the same as yesterday. Though they are all probably 10/13 by now. They are practically on holidays. I wonder what they do at home. Nevertheless, school with little people is very fun as well. You get to interact more with people that you may not usually interact with and the best part of all, there are less people to share that Children's Day chocolates... =p
Wow, early this morning at around 3.50a.m. I was awoken by a loud noise. My roommate was shouting all over, as if there was an emergency. I was shocked as well. The sound was as if something had collapsed. The door was half-open, by wind! It takes quite substantial a force to open the door because of the auto-close mechanism and there it was, swinging back and forth, half-open. My windows were forced open as well. Usually, when the door is open, some kind of current would make wind blow from the door in and windows out. Yesterday was like that, but the wind was much more violent and a lot of my papers were flying. I was preparing for the worse. I thought a typhoon had hit Singapore or something. It was nothing ordinary. Especially after reading both Times and Newsweek coverage on possible causes for massive hurricanes, I was sure that maybe Singapore was not spared as well. After all, nothing is impossible. I sprang up and shut the windows tight. I had to climb out a bit because the curtains had flew out and entangled over the top frame of the window panel. Even though my vision were blur because I was half asleep, outside it was very bright for a 4a.m. sky. The sky looked like it was 7.30a.m. or something like that because of the very frequent lightning and thunder. The trees were all blown to one side and since the wind was very strong I had to hurry and shut the windows and thereafter, I did not look out again. The door was still half-open when I shut it tight and lock it. Suddenly, the room became peaceful and quiet, none of the havoc that were there were felt and me and my roommate went back to sleep. I could not sleep for a while, and the air-con was not cold at first as most have escaped through the window. I was wondering what if a disaster is to really happen? Soon, the noise subsided and so, I fell asleep.
I woke up in the morning like any other morning, except that this morning was raining. Think it has been raining here since 12a.m. last night. When I walked out of the room, I was surprised to see that the palm trees at the basketball courts lost most of its long leaves, scattered over the courts. The two rubbish bin there too, were smashed and collapsed. (one against the lamp pole and the other against the concrete wall. Then I was heading to the laundry, and I saw the shelter to the grandstand had collapsed as well. One of them were overturned and landed on the other side, the pool side, upside down. The other two shelters were just a mangled mess. It is a pity that I did not have a camera to take down what might have been history. I was a bit late and so I ran a bit. As I reached the Dover neighbourhood opposite, the 'fake' palm trees had collapsed as well. Wow, never seen so much destruction by wind and nature before. Think this is a very good experience, as it gives us empathy for unfortunate hurricane victims. It could have been you!
Yesterday's expenditure.
- $2 (yong tau foo, again!)
Today's standing!
- 1st place - Regina Tan (9/12)
- 1st place - Michelle Pay (9/12)
- 3rd place - Kai Yang (absent today as well)
Yesterday's fiscals,
- $2 (yong tau foo, yay, save money)
- $20 (for Fun-O-Rama coupons)
I am quite disgusted at those people who have money to buy expensive mp3 players but have no money to pay twenty dollars for Fun-O-Rama coupons. I dunno what to say. Hmmm, today only 11 people turned up for assembly, with 7 turning up for classes. Only my class have a hole in the middle of lt1. It is so obvious but no one said a thing.
Latest standing on today's pon spree. Top three position still held by those three people. In short,
- 1st place - Regina Tan (8/11)
- 1st place - Michelle Pay (8/11)
- 3rd place - Kai Yang (figure unknown but did not see him today, yet)
Did a practice paper in the morn. Was very bad because out of 6 questions, 2 were out of topics that I have studied. Hopefully things would turn out better for the rest of today.
Congratulations to those who had obtained an -'A' in the Prelims. However, as a caution, do not get too complacent. Sustaining that 'A' is even more challenging than clinching one. For those of you who managed a 'B' keep at it and you will transform the 'B' into an 'A'. As for the others, you are not far from that 'A'. It is not an elusive grade. It's there placed on a golden platter for you to pick it up. First, you've got to crave for it and you will then earn it. It's just that easy - keep desiring and do something.
Stand for something or you will fall for anything or worst still nothing. I've said this before and I say this again. Success is not like riding an escalator, it is more like scaling a ladder a ladder. You will have to climb relentlessly. Despair will not get you anywhere. Put your TYS to good use right away for they have no resale value. Scale that energy barrier (EA) of yours; displace the equilibrium forward to a more favourable position; get your ionic product to exceed saturation levels; resonate more with your peers and teachers to attain stability; engage in processes (consultation with teachers and more 'learned' friends) that augment your electrode potentials and reduce entropy so as to strive towards crystallinity. Remember, the more you keep doing work (collision frequency) with focus (correct orientation factor) the higher the RATE of success. With a balanced stoichiometry (content vs practice vs time management) you will harvest many, many moles of 'A's.
Mr. Kuna had always been an inspiration because of his professionalism. I find education more interesting under him. We did not have to keep in syllabus. The 'E' that I got for Prelims did not reflect what he had taught us. He had taught us more than that. At this point of time, I am actually very sorry for what I have done or not done. Hope that I really can do justice at the actual 'A' levels paper. Come to think of it, my Chemistry had came thus far was indeed a feat and a tinge of luck. Shall explain the luck part. Somehow, since secondary school, I seem to be always in contact with Chem teachers in one way or another. Though I could not remember all of them, here are some of them. My Compserv CCA teacher, Ms. Kwoh, is one of the better Chem teachers around in school. Mrs. Quek was also a Compserv teacher. My hallmaster in Sec 2, Mr. Liang was a Chem teacher. My hallmaster from Sec. 3 onwards till now, Mr. Chew, was the Head of Department of Science and now the Dean of Sciences. Think he is the only other teacher so far that I have met to reach the standard of Mr. Kuna. Think there are many more teachers that I came into close contact with were also Chem teachers though I cannot remember most of them by now. That's why some Chem sense sort of diffuse over to me. Mr. Chew once told me, as a chemist, you should never depend on luck, so why am I explaining about this entire luck thing? Chem was never my favourite subject in secondary school anyway. I used to love Physics. Anyway, Mr. Kuna also made a card for everyone in class. While the card is the same for everyone in class, the message was different. I think something on the card is very true. Here is what's true:
The Winner – is always part of the answer
The Loser – is always part of the problem
The Winner – always has a program
The Loser – always has an excuse
The Winner – says, "Let me do it for you"
The Loser – says, "Thats not my job"
The Winner – sees an answer for every problem
The Loser – sees a problem for every answer.
The Winner – sees a green near every sand trap
The Loser – sees two or three sand traps near every green
The Winner – says, "It may be difficult but it's possible"
The Loser – says, "It may be possible but it's too difficult"
Let’s all be a Winner?

Thursday was like a roller-coaster. Just after I blog about my 17/20 Bio essay, I had Bio lesson and I got back another practice piece and I was utterly devastated. I thought I did very well and overkilled every question. Hmmm, in the end the score was 7/20 with a 0/6 part (a). My confidence was shattered for a moment. Think my mind really works like a roller-coaster, one moment on high and the next moment rock-bottom. Luckily, failure is the mother of success. I should learn from my mistakes and carry on.
On another note, Thursday had been inspirational. I went for koinonia and it was Mr. Tan See Keng playing the piano. Initially it was two seniors, (probably one or two years my senior) but they could not play the song that Ms. Kwee wanted to sing. When Mr. Tan took the piano, the hall was filled with applauses. I wonder if he still remembers me, then a Sec 1-2 boy who would always request transparencies from him before koinonia, so that I can flash them for the rest of the people. He usually plays the piano though he is also an excellent guitar player. Come to think of it, 5-6 years had passed since then. The only interesting fact I know about him was that he was once ACJC’s student’s council president. (1978 if I am not wrong, or was it 1988?) Starting to wonder how he was like in school and all sorts of things. Think he must have been very popular. He is not the only person who amazes me. Dr. Ong too. He had 7 or 8 CCAs during his JC life and that includes Debate and Cross Country. I wonder how he juggled between so many CCAs and amongst them, a few sports CCAs? Then he went on to the army, at which he again swept all the possible awards and even winning the sword of honour. Another highlight was that he finished his Ph. D in two and a half years at Oxford, while the people there had expected him to complete it in four. Amazing! Seeing these people only showed me that there are a lot of possibilities in life. Being an over-achiever is not really impossible. I see many of them nowadays anyway.
During koinonia too, I saw a few shirts that have very meaningful messages. They consoled me and brought me back to sanity. I started to get very inspired but unfortunately, I could not study then because it was koinonia. Anyway, here are some of meaningful lines that I saw.
If you dare to dream it,
If you are willing to work hard at it,
Surely you can achieve it!
Each day is a gift...
So full of opportunities, live each day to the fullest
Make it the best day in your life
Turn your vision and dreams to action and do not forget to enjoy the journey...
And I found this to be the most meaningful and have the most relevance of all,
It;s better to look ahead and prepare,
Than to look back and regret...
On Friday, I started the day extremely tired, so I ended up sleeping most of the time. Finally started to pon lectures, though I think I am actually very slow to start. Anyway, a lot of people 'accidentally' pon the same lectures as I did. I ended up sleeping in some unoccupied classroom and that still did not recharge me. I was anxious as there is a Gp mock exam coming after school. The fact that it may be the last ever Gp exam that I would have before ‘A’ levels saddens me. It reminds me that my journey here at ACJC is coming to an end and I really do not want it to end. It is much too early. Speaking about ponning, I think no class can beat my class. (so far) I am still keeping count, to see who’s the pon star or the pon queen. Topping the list now would be Regina (pon 2/5,5/5 for last two weeks, total 7/10) and Michelle (pon 4/5,3/5 for last two weeks, total 7/10). Think Kai Yang also made it into the Hall of Fame, though I really do not have the figures. He is quite mysterious to the extent that even that when he is in school, we would not know. The number of people that did not absent a single day can be counted in one hand and that would be me, Michael, Chong-U, Terence and Cheryl. Shall have a daily updated leader board on number of days people pon. Anyway, the best on Friday was the Gp mock exam. Luckily just before that, we had Bio and our teacher gave us New Scientist to read. I was fascinated but after that, I felt more than happy because I was able to use most of the interesting facts in my Gp essay. Coupled with my experience playing Simcity 3000 Unlimited for the week, I thundered straight through into the environmental question. I had more than enough points and I did not have enough time to put them all in words. My essay came out 4 pages long and that is the longest I have ever produced in any exams. I got my drift and I was absolutely on fire writing. Hopefully, my essay would make it onto Gp website this time.
